I’m sure that this has happened to everybody, but it happened to me today, so I decided to write about it. I was brainstorming with one of my colleagues on the marketing team, and we were trying to solve a problem and figure out how to advertise a service for one of our clients when it hit me… BE AUTHENTIC.

The solution was sitting there right in front of me, but it’s not just the solution to this problem; it’s really the solution to everything we do as advertisers and marketers. The thing is, it’s something that we all know and talk about all the time; it’s just not something that we REALLY put into practice. Sometimes we do, but essentially we don’t, and the answer is BE AUTHENTIC.

Being authentic means not worrying about video times or character times. It’s not about worrying about finding the right words to say or how you’re going to present yourself or the product. Just present it as if you’re having a chat over coffee. Pretend like people are in the room with you and you’re having a true human-to-human conversation. Just talk about your product or service.

It’s the same as if you’re writing or creating a caption for your video; the more natural and authentic our content and the more casual we can be, the more it will capture the attention of your audience.

If you do your research, you’re going to see a lot of different opinions from social media specialists, and they’re going to tell you things like keep your LinkedIn video to 30 seconds and no more than one minute on Instagram – and if all you care about is algorithms, then please, follow that advice. However, if it takes two minutes to talk about your product, then take two minutes. If it only takes 30 seconds, then release a 30-second video. Don’t make it longer just to make it longer and lose the authenticity.

The point is to be as authentic as possible. You don’t need fancy equipment—a phone and maybe a mic are all you need to produce authentic content…. Don’t just talk about being authentic; actually be authentic.
