Age 15 – 18 and looking for a summer job? The YJC: Summer program from Job Skills helps prepare you for employment and find you a part time or full time summer job. The program includes a 20-hour training program to learn employment skills, resume writing and interviewing. Then you’ll work with one of our employment specialists to help find a job.

There are a limited number of openings for participants in the YJC: Summer program. If you want to be a part of the program, please register as soon as possible.
If you participate successfully in the program, the YJC: Summer program through Job Skills will:
- Train you for the workplace
- Find you a summer job
- Help pay for things you might need for work, like transportation (as needed)

- Full time or part-time, 8-week job for July and August 2017
- Entry-level work suitable for someone with limited work experience
- Employers who hire summer help usually are in food service, landscaping, recreational facilities, and construction
- Most jobs pay minimum wage. Some higher paying jobs may be available (e.g. in construction)
Job Skills will attempt to find you employment near your home or preferred work location, however, we cannot guarantee that local jobs will be available. The highest concentration of jobs will be found in larger population centres in Northern York Region, including Newmarket, Keswick and Aurora.
To participate in the YJC: Summer program you will need transportation to/from the Pre-Employment Workshops and your employer. Transportation could include public transit, driving yourself in your own vehicle if you have a license, or catching a ride with a family member or friend. Some participants may qualify for YRT Mobility Plus for people with disabilities. In cases of need, the YJC: Summer program may be able to help pay for transportation costs.
Participants of the YJC: Summer program are expected to complete 8 weeks of placement. Most employers will be flexible if you need to miss a short time from work, for example for a scheduled holiday with your family.
In a few cases, Job Skills might be able to arrange part time employment before, during or after the summer in order to help you fulfill all of the expected hours if you are not available to work for a large portion of the summer.
- Complete at least 20 hours of pre-employment training
- Participate fully and provide all needed information and forms
- Complete all assignments, including preparing a resume
- Attend interviews scheduled for you
- Accept a job opportunity offered to you
- Completed, signed and dated Employment Ontario Participant Registration Form which will be provided to you
- Proof of identification: birth certificate, driver’s license or other photographic identification
- If you are an immigrant, proof of immigrant status and ability to work in Canada
- Valid social insurance number
Pre-Employment Workshops are scheduled for Newmarket and Keswick from late April to June. There are a variety of workshop formats (weekend only, two nights a week or four nights a week) so you can find a session that fits your schedule.

Yes. You will be paid for your training. You will be paid a stipend equal to minimum wage (currently $11.40 per hour).
To be eligible you must meet the following criteria:
- 15 – 18 years of age
- Resident of Ontario
- Eligible to work in Canada
- High school student intending to return to high school or attend post secondary school (college, trade school, university, etc.)
YJC: Summer is open to all eligible youth, however, the intention is to help youth who have a lower likelihood of finding a summer job by themselves and who would most need services offered by YJC: Summer.
Some youth may encounter barriers to finding employment. Youth may be racialized, LGBTTQ, indigenous, living with disabilities or mental health issues, or recent immigrants. In addition, youth may be facing some combination of other challenging life circumstances including difficulties at school, poverty/low income household or problems with family life, conflict with the law, living in communities lacking resources, or experiencing lack of motivation, low confidence, detachment, feeling isolated, etc.
The YJC: Summer program is open to all eligible youth. We have a limited number of positions available, however, so please consider carefully if the program is right for you before registering. Here are some important reasons NOT to participate:
- If you already have a job lined up for the summer
- If you do not feel ready to commit to a full time, 8-week summer job (or a long term part time job)
- If you are not planning to return to high school or go on to post-secondary school in the fall
- If you are not between the ages of 15 and 18 at the time of registration
- If you are not eligible to work in Canada
- If you are enrolled in certain employment services program or a YJC program with another service provider.
If any of these situations apply to you, we may be able to help refer you to another program for assistance.
- Select and register for the Pre-Employment Workshop Session you wish to attend
- Complete your scheduled Pre-Employment Workshop session
- Meet with a YJC: Summer staff member to discuss your interests, skills, work experience and preferences for a job.
- Participate in job coaching as needed.
- Attend one or more interviews and accept a matching position, if offered
- Perform your employment placement and stay in touch with Job Skills so we know how it’s going
- Perform an exit interview with the employer and Job Skills to assess the degree to which the program met your expectations and helped you attain skills, knowledge or confidence to continue in school and get the next job.
